{"id":353,"date":"2014-11-26T02:48:56","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T02:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrawal-family.com\/ramkumarfoundation\/?p=353"},"modified":"2020-08-03T07:17:37","modified_gmt":"2020-08-03T07:17:37","slug":"beckman-study-of-the-database-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrawal-family.com\/ramkumarfoundation\/beckman-study-of-the-database-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Beckman Study of the Database Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"LEFT\">Every few years a group of database researchers meets to discuss the state of database research, its impact on practice, and important new directions.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The&nbsp;<a title=\"The Beckman Database Research Self-Assessment Meeting, October 14-15, 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/beckman.cs.wisc.edu\/\">eighth such meeting<\/a>, held October 14-15, 2013&nbsp;at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeckmancenter.org\/\">Beckman Center<\/a> of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, observed that Big Data has now become a defining challenge of our time, and that the database research community is uniquely positioned to address it, with enormous opportunities to make transformative impact.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">To do so, the <a title=\"Beckman Report on Database Research, October 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/beckman.cs.wisc.edu\/beckman-report2013.pdf\">report<\/a> summarizing the deliberations at the meeting recommends significantly&nbsp;greater attention to \u0005five research areas: scalable big\/fast data infrastructures; coping with diversity in the data management landscape; end-to-end processing and understanding of data; cloud services; and managing the diverse roles of people in the data life cycle.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">It was our privilege to be able to support this landmark meeting (together with <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\">Microsoft Corporation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmartlabs.com\/\">WalmartLabs<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ramkumarfoundation.agrawal-family.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hat_tip-e1414475659456.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-100 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ramkumarfoundation.agrawal-family.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hat_tip-e1414475659456-150x150.gif?resize=31%2C31\" alt=\"hat_tip\" width=\"31\" height=\"31\"><\/a>&nbsp; Mike Carey &amp; AnnHai Doan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every few years a group of database researchers meets to discuss the state of database research, its impact on practice, and important new directions.
